What is Henna?
Henna is the Persian name for a shrub known as Lawsonia inermis. Henna thrives in warmer climates all over the world. The henna plant has four-petaled flowers ranging from yellow to pink . The leaves produce a red to brownish dye. Twice a year the leaves are harvested, dried, and ground into a fine powder. This powder is used to dye hair and for the ancient eastern art of mehndi. There are colors for the hair that can range from yellow, red, and black shades. The henna that is used for mehndi can range from yellow, red and a reddish brown. There are other colors for mehndi but they can contain artificial dyes that don’t tend to stain as dark as regular henna.
